Architecture creates spaces to live, such as buildings, while Urbanism creates urban zones in which a certain group of people can relate to one another, such as cities, towns, villages, etc; however, architects and planners have something in common, both create places based on the design, although the design work of the urban planners tend to be less specific and tangible, not so easy to visualize like the design work of architects. On the other hand, for the development of their design, each professional has to take care about different factors. For example, the architect creates a singular building based on the will of one costumer or group of costumers, while the urban planner must create places that have to be good for all the people that will be there, without considering the particular interests that each person has.
Urbanism is a new profession that comes from Architecture. However, Architecture finds its origins a couple of thousand years before today. At the beginning, when the planners did not exist, their work was done by other professionals such as architects.
Currently, Caracas has great architectural structures, but still is weak at an urban level. The configuration of the urban system in this city, in spite of being one of the biggest and most important cities of the country, it seems –in my opinion- has not been well analyzed. For example, the zones with big populations do not have enough roads according to the amount of people that live in that area, or do not have an efficient system of transport that allows the mobilization of that people to or from these places. I believe that new professionals of urbanism and architecture must come together to produce quality work for development of Caracas in these two areas and that these proposals should be designed for the welfare of all people who live here.
